If you enjoy good sex (and who doesn’t, by the way!), you’ll know that one of the rules of thumb is that ‘the wetter, the better. Following that, it will only be logical to conclude that using lube will lead to a delightful session of sex because wetter is precisely what you will get when you use a good lubricant during sex.
Of course, lubes are necessary for women to find natural or organic lubrication difficulties. However, times are long gone when we only used to associate lubricants with vaginal dryness. If that were the case, there wouldn’t have been such an overwhelming variety of lubes in the market in the first place. And subsequently, there may not have been a need to engage in our present discussion either.
Instead, think about smoother skin, preventing friction during sex, and an all-around better and more pleasurable experience. You can see why sex lubes have become so highly popular and why the market is flooded with various products.
Approximately 2,500 women who participated in an Indiana University Survey conducted in 2009 reported that they enjoyed more exciting and pleasurable sex when using lube at least 70 percent of the time.
And yes, did we forget to mention the little affair of anal sex there?!
Finding the Right Lube for You
Romantic Adventures lubes are gels or liquids primarily designed to prevent uncomfortable friction during sex. They can be used during penetrative anal sex and masturbation. Also, if you are in the habit of using sex toys, certain types of lubes are also safe to apply to your toys.
However, once someone walks into a sex store and makes their way to the Lubes section, it is easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of products. And, of course, you don’t want to pick just about any product at random.
This is why some prior knowledge of different types of lubricants and what they are suitable for (and what they are not) will help you make an informed decision as to what kind of lube will be best suited to your needs. Even so, you may still need to do a bit of experimentation and trial-and-error before you hit on the perfect lube for you. However, that is for later.
The first thing to know is that all the different types of lubes can be classified according to their bases.
And all sex lubricants come in four principal bases:
- Water
- Silicone
- Oil
- Hybrid (combining one or more of the above bases)
In the last few years, natural lube products have been gaining in popularity, too. But we’ll get to them later.
Water-Based Lubes
Water-based lubes are the most popular, safest, and most versatile option in the lube world. They are gentle on your skin, help reduce friction during sex, and are safe to use with latex and nonlatex condoms. Additionally, you can use them on your silicone toys as well.
Water-based lubes are also easy to wash off, and if you’re having sex on the bed, you won’t need to worry about stains on your sheets.
The only downside of this lube is that they tend to dry out quickly and are not as long-lasting as silicone-based or hybrid lubes, meaning you may need to reapply them more than once during sex.
Silicone-Based Lubes
Since silicone-based lubes are hypoallergenic, they are considered ideal for sensitive skin. Additionally, silicone lubes are long-lasting and feel silky smooth on your sensitive parts. Many contend that they had a more pleasurable experience with silicone lubes than water-based ones.
Silicone lubes also your best bet for anal sex. Additionally, if you prefer using a lubricant for masturbation, many opine that silicone-based lubes work better than water-based lubes.
On the downside, silicone lubes are not ideal for use with silicone toys. They tend to rub the surface of the toys, which can encourage bacterial growth. As for their compatibility with condoms, the opinions seem to be divided. Some maintain that using silicone lubes with latex condoms is alright, while others remark that these lubes often lead to condom breakage.
So, if you are a silicone lube fan and want to use it with a condom, you may need to experiment with a couple or more products to find something that keeps the condom intact during sex.
Finally, silicone-based lubes are more complicated to wash off than water-based lubes. This makes it an excellent lube for shower sex. Otherwise, you’ll need to spend some good time in the bathroom after sex.
Oil-Based Lubes
As far as we are concerned, oil-based lubes are a STRICT No-No. First, they are terrible on your condoms and can cause rips and tears in no time. They will be equally unmerciful on your expensive sheets, and you’ll have a hard time removing those unsightly stains off your sheet.
More importantly, using oil-based lubes is a bad idea since it is difficult to wash off, and the remnants will turn rancid at body temperature. A 2013 study reveals that oil-based lubes are connected with higher rates of Candida, a kind of fungus that causes yeast infections.
And if anybody tries to tell you that you can double up oil-based lubricants as both sex’s lube and massage oil, let us put it categorically here that massage oils are not lubricants and should never be used as such.
Some people feel tempted to use oil-based lubricants because of their quick and long-lasting properties. If you’re one of them, we would instead use a hybrid lubricant such as water-based lubricants that contain propylene glycol or glycerin. However, note that if you are prone to allergies, have sensitive skin, or have other skin issues, you should stay clear of glycerin, which can lead to irritation and other issues for people with soft and sensitive skin.
All Natural Lubes
Natural lube products have been coming up fast in the sex accessories market in the last few years. However, you must be guard while using any of these products.
According to research, some of the best natural ingredients that can be safely used as lubricants include Aloe Vera, Sea Carrageenan, and Coconut Oil.
A natural moisturizer, Aloe Vera comes with antimicrobial properties that prevent the risks of yeast infections. Coconut oil, similarly, is an excellent moisturizer that helps to keep delicate vaginal tissue healthy and well-lubricated. On the other hand, sea carrageenan is a type of algae that is gentle on the skin and makes for an excellent, long-lasting, thick lubricant.
Also, none of these ingredients interfere with the natural pH balance of the vagina. However, when coconut oil is concerned, you may still want to consider the health of your expensive bed sheets!
Now, you can use any of the products mentioned above directly as lubricants. However, if you want to go for a ‘natural lube’ product, check the list of ingredients (fewer ingredients, the better) and the percentages they are present in the product.
For example, the Aloe Cadabra organic lube (one of the most popular products in this category) contains 95% Aloe Vera and is an overall excellent choice. You must also ensure that your natural or organic lube is paraben-free and 100% vegan.
